125th anniversary Women's Suffrage assistance

The State Government has today announced grants of up to $5,000 are available to local councils and non-for-profit organisations to host events and develop initiatives that celebrate the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in South Australia in 2019.

The anniversary celebrates changes to the law in 1894, when women won the right to vote and stand for Parliament in South Australia – a first for anywhere in Australia.

Premier Steven Marshall said a total of $125,000 will be provided to support the community to commemorate this important date in the state’s history.

“Giving women the right to vote was a huge step towards gender equality and positive change for women in South Australia and is something we can all be proud of in this state,” said Premier Marshall.

Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the anniversary was an opportunity to commemorate the landmark victory for women’s rights, and encourages organisations to recognise and celebrate the importance of this anniversary during 2019 by hosting an event or activity.

“We are particularly keen to see events and initiatives that include women of all ages, especially those that engage women whose history and stories should be shared, such as women living with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and women from diverse cultural backgrounds,” said Minister Lensink.

“While this is an opportunity to reflect on the journey, there is still much to be done as a community to continue to work towards gender equality.”

Successful grant applications will be announced on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2019. Grant applications are open until 15 February 2019 and can be submitted online at www.officeforwomen.sa.gov.au/SAsuffrage125
