Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis MP confirms today that he will run as an Independent in the state election expected to be held in March.
The decision follows notification by the Liberal Party executive last night that preselection for the Narungga electorate is now open, to close 24 January 2022.
“The Liberal Party have decided not to let me return as their endorsed candidate in the upcoming election – I confirm that I will be nominating as an independent candidate for Narungga,” Mr Ellis states.
“This essentially changes nothing in the way that I operate as my community’s local member of parliament.
“I have always put our community first, ahead of party, which was best exemplified when I crossed the floor to vote against the government on the mining bill.”
Mr Ellis said whilst he is very disappointed with last night’s decision given the loyalty he has long held with the party, he welcomes the fact a decision has at least been made given the election is now only some 8 weeks away.
“I thank the local branch members for their vocal advocacy in wanting me to remain as the Liberal candidate and for the strong support they have always shown me, and continue to provide me.
“I believe I have a strong track record of advocating for what our community needs and then delivering it. If re-elected I intend to keep putting our community first and delivering what it needs.”
