More welcome announcements

15 Apr 2024

Welcome announcements this month have included the near $4.2 million offered as a start for local jetty maintenance from the SA Jetties Renewal Program (pending terms & conditions); upgrades to the hospital helipads at Wallaroo, Port Broughton, Balaklava (and others); and confirmation that work on the new seven bay CFS/SES station at Maitland is anticipated to commence by September 2024.

Under the Regional Key Worker Housing Scheme, I was also particularly pleased that local builder Country Living Homes was announced the tender winner to build nine houses in the Copper Coast to house essential government staff (teachers, police officers, health workers).

Of these nine houses, five will be in Kadina and four in Moonta.

Events

The 2024 South Australian First Nations Voice Election came to its conclusion this month, with a welcome event at Parliament House held last week for newly elected First Nation Voice Members. I congratulate the 7 successful candidates for Region 6 (Yorke and Mid North): Raymond Wanganeen, Doug Milera, Joy Makepeace, Kaylene O’Loughlin, Denise Wanganeen, Quentin Agius and Eddie Newchurch.

I was privileged to open the Masters Games in Kadina last Friday; a fantastic opportunity to commend Copper Coast Council, lead organiser Lynn Spurling and the amazing numbers of volunteers who convene and officiate the multiple of sports on offer to the more than 1,000 competitors. This is our region’s third time hosting and what an opportunity it is to showcase our facilities and hospitality! So many health benefits that additionally bring significant local economic benefits for our retail and tourism businesses.

Grants

Congratulations to the Broughton Mundoora Football Club Inc on receiving $19,842.00 from the South Australian Football Facilities Fund for new goal posts and backing nets.

It is hoped more local sporting clubs will be successful in the Office of Sport and Recreation’s “The Power of Her-Infrastructure and Participation Program”, due to be announced in June.

Free Grant Workshop for Community Groups

There is a free grant workshop for community groups to be run on Thursday 2 May in Kadina, a commendable joint initiative of Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North and the Copper Coast Council.

This event will assist community and sporting clubs to write grant applications that maximise chances of success, and will also advise groups how to find and apply for the right grant.

The 2 May workshop will be held from 2pm-3pm in Kadina Town Hall. To register your attendance, phone 1300 742 414.
